Are You Keeping Your Car Maintained?

If you’re sheltered in place and not really going anywhere, you may not think you need to keep your vehicle maintained. That’s not the case, a car that sits and isn’t driven as much can impact the potential safety of the vehicle. Let’s review a few reasons.

Tires
When a vehicle is left in the same spot for too long, the tires can start experiencing flat-spotting. This is when the weight of the vehicle sitting in one spot can flatten a portion of the rubber on the tire. Check your tire pressure often and compare it to your manufacturer’s recommendations. If they need air, make sure you take care of inflating them.

Brakes
Your brake rotors can begin developing rust if left unused for a long period of time. If you use your parking brake, you may want to consider taking your car for a spin every so often or if you can, don’t use the parking break.

Battery
As your vehicle sits, your car’s battery has the ability to discharge, which will require a jump-start. If your vehicle will be sitting for a long period of time, disconnect the battery to avoid that from happening.

Drive It
The best way to keep it maintained is to drive it around every so often. Take it out for a grocery run or go and pick up takeout from a local small business.

We know these times are difficult. Worrying about our vehicle not being in top shape when we can get back to driving regularly, should not have to be an issue, but it is something you need to think about.
