Your home is more than just a living space, it’s a place where you rest, play and grow too! My tip for you this summer (if you haven’t done so already) is to start a garden. Yes, a garden! Besides making your home more appealing it also has many other benefits that may surprise you.
These days, more and more people are discovering the joys gardening. Food gardening is making a comeback, with nearly 20 percent more households starting to garden withing the past five years. All of the new interest in it may have a lot to do with more people wanting to know where their food is coming from. Gardening provides the ability to have access to those healthy, high-quality foods many people are looking for these days. Plus it also helps support the environment!
Gardening also comes with great health benefits. For one thing, it gets people outside and doing activities that promote wellness. Another way is, those who garden are known to consume more fruits and vegetables than those who don’t garden. When you choose to grow your own food, you are reducing your exposure to pesticides and potentially eating produce with a higher nutrient content. Gardening will also reduce stress, improves metal health and counts as a moderate-intensity exercise; which all will help you live longer.
With all those good reasons to garden, what are you waiting for?
The wonderful thing about gardening is there are so many potential plants that you can grow! Before you start just planting, sit down and think about these following questions:
- What type of plants do you want to grow? Many individuals are only interested in growing their own food, but there are many others that want to just increase the beauty of their yard.
- If you chose to go with planting food, what do you like to eat? Think about the fruit and vegetables you are going to eat and plant only those. Don’t plant things like zucchini or beans if you don’t like them and have no interest in eating them.
- How much space and light do you have available for your garden? Determine if you will be gardening in the ground or on a patio or deck, depending on what you decide and where you’re garden will be placed may change what you grow.
- How much time are you planning to spend gardening? Plants need regular care, when it comes to weeding, watering and so on. It’s always a good idea to start on the small side and then if you’re loving it you can always increase the amount of time!
I wish you much success with your new garden. Remember that gardening it’s a matter of trial and error, but have fun while doing it.
We wish you a happy and safe summer!
