Well it is finally feeling like summer, and that means it is time to get that boat out on the water. Just remember to make sure it is ready and safe for another summer on the water. Listed below are a few tips to get your boat ready:
- Inspect the fuel system for leaks or damage. Be sure to pay special attention to the fuel hoses, connections and tank surfaces.
- Make sure the engine, exhaust and ventilation systems are all working properly.
- Inspect all of the electrical connections for tight, clean, and especially corrosion free connections. Corroded connections can be dangerous when you are out on the water.
- Inspect propellers for dings, pitting, cracks and distortion. Damaged propellers could cause unwanted vibration and damage to your drive train.
- Check all fluid levels including engine oil, power steering, power trim reservoirs and coolant.
- Make sure all of your life jackets are in good condition. You also want to make sure that you have enough on board for any potential passengers.
- Check to make sure that your fire extinguishers are the correct class for your vessel, and are fully charged and stowed in the proper place.
- If you have any enclosed or semi-enclosed areas on your boat, make sure you have at least one properly installed and working carbon monoxide detector.
