Yes, we’re again experiencing another harsh winter with high winds, sub-zero temperatures, snow and ice. Do you know if these damages are covered on your homeowners insurance policy? While homeowners insurance policies do cover most winter-related storm damage that may occur from snow, sleet or wind, one thing they don’t cover is flooding. While we normally think of flooding related to summer, there are many possibilities for winter related flooding from melting snow. If you have issues with flooding in your basement, it may be smart to consider purchasing flood insurance.
Here are a few ways you can protect your home:
• Keep gutters and downspouts clean.
• Apply weather stripping and caulking to doors and windows where there are drafts. Install new windows if your windows are cracked or broken.
• If you haven’t already, insulate any pipes that are at risk of freezing.
• To keep pipes from freezing let cold water trickle from the faucet.
• When shoveling, shovel snow away from your home. This will help avoid flooding in your basement when the snow starts to melt.
While you can never fully protect your home from winter-related storm damages, you can be assured that should you experience damage to your property we are there to fully assist you.
