Make Safety Part of your Summer

by Iris Pantoja

Summer is finally here and it’s time to have fun. It is a time for family and friends to gather and make great memories together. The kids are out of school, the barbecue is hot and ready, the pool is waiting to cool you off, and at night the fireworks will light up the sky. Sounds great right? Well to keep the good times rolling with safety in mind here are a few tips to keep.

1) Pools – If you have a pool in your home make sure that is fenced to avoid unnecessary accidents caused by uninvited guests. Also make sure the deep and shallow areas of the pool are clearly marked. Always have small children supervised. And avoid slip and falls by not running around the pool and wearing proper foot wear. You can also use this guidelines to practice safety if you are going to be visiting someone who does have a pool.

2) Barbecue – Nothing says summer louder than cooking outdoors, and in your home that means barbecue. Many summer fires and accidents are caused by barbecue mishaps. These tips should help you stay safe. Have a fire extinguisher near by. Before grilling check your propane tank for gas leaks. One way to know is by applying soapy water to the valves, if you see bubbles call the fire department. Never leave your grill unattended. Also, keep it a safe distant from the house and any combustible materials like an overhead or a fence.

3) Fireworks – Fireworks have become a big part of our summer celebrations, specially on the 4th of July. When using fireworks at home it is important to buy and use state approved fireworks. Read the instructions first. Keep a safe distance from the house, look for an open area. Assign a responsible adult to light them. Remember, alcohol and fireworks don’t mix! Never leave children unattended, even if they are using sparklers. Have water near by.
