One of the most common and upsetting things that can happen to a car owner is an accident. To help you keep calm and get through all the trouble, here are some steps to take before, during, and after an accident.
- Be prepared for a car accident. Keep important information in your car at all times and have a kit prepared. Basic first aid could help with minor injuries, and a camera or pen and paper can be used to record and keep track of important information during the accident. If your insurance provider has an app that can help in an accident, make sure to have the app on your phone.
- Get to safety. If you and your car are capable of doing so, move out of the way of traffic and put on your hazard lights. Once you’re out of the way park your car and take a minute to catch your breath.
- Check on others. Get out of your car, if it is safe to do so, and make sure all others involved are not injured. If anybody even shows minor injuries, such as dizziness, call 911 immediately.
- Call the police. Even for small incidents, a police report may help decide who is to blame for the accident. Because the police will find the blame, do not blame others or yourself until after the accident has been dealt with.
- Gather information. Write down all information regarding who was involved, when and where the accident occurred, and the cars’ models and licenses. Do not leave out anybody on the scene including witnesses and police.
- Document the car accident. Take pictures of everything that was damaged, which can help later during the claim process.
- File your claim. At this point, contact your insurance provider and do as they say from there. They should take care of the rest.
