Fire Prevention Week

by Sean Wyandt

Did you know house fires are the number one threat to homeowners? Here, at Rothenberger Insurance, we want to help you prevent a house fire, which is why we’ve compiled the list below.

  1. Use candles with care. Do you burn candles at home? If so, make sure they are kept away from materials that catch on fire easily. Only have candles lit when you are home and awake. Always double-check to make sure your candles are blown out before you leave or go to sleep.
  2. Watch your cords. Due to electrical cords producing heat, they need room to breathe. With that in mind, make sure they aren’t trapped tightly between the wall and furniture. If you have pets, check cords regularly. Cords damaged by pets are potential fire starters.
  3. Clean your dryer vent often. Over time your dryer vent gets clogged from lint that gets past the dryer filter. Any lint that gets clogged blocks the flow of air which causes heat to build up and, in turn, can cause a fire. So it’s important to clean out your dryer vent often!
  4. Hang with your stove. In 2013 the number one cause of house fires was cooking. With that in mind, never leave your stove unattended when you’re cooking! http://www.usfa.fema.gov/data/statistics/

Sometimes fires happen and there is nothing you can do about it, but you can prepare yourself for them by making sure you have smoke detectors and that their batteries are changed regularly!
