Fall Home Tips

The leaves are changing color, the nights are getting colder, and the days are getting shorter…it’s officially fall! Besides the change in season, you’ve probably noticed a change in your schedule. Now that the kids have gone back to school and your calendar becomes fuller, you may have less time to get around to your home’s to-do list before winter sets in. There are some things that shouldn’t wait until the weather gets cold, though. Here’s a checklist of fall maintenance tasks to do while you can still get outside.

  1. Clean those gutters
It’s a task we all dread, but it’s something that needs to be done. Gutters drain thousands of gallons of water from your roof that would otherwise flood your house or damage its exterior. Needless to say, they’re important. Taking an afternoon to clean, or possibly replace, them will prevent a leaky roof in the future.
  2. Drain the outdoor faucets
The last thing you want to deal with in the middle of a blizzard is water freezing because you forgot to drain the faucets outside. Or even worse, broken pipes. Better get to it now rather than later!
  3. Check for drafts
While it may be nice to have cooler outdoor temperatures, it’s still nice to come home to a warm house. Heat loss can cost you over time, so it’s important to double-check that the windows are sealed properly. If not, it may be time to invest in weather stripping.
  4. Pack up outdoor furniture
The days of sitting by the pool have come and gone, which means it’s time to put away any patio or outdoor furniture. If you want to get the most out of it, don’t let it set out once the frost begins. Store it in the garage or shed so it’s in tiptop shape for next summer.
  5. Give the old snow blower a test run
But wait, isn’t it still kind of warm outside? Yes, even though it’s likely you won’t be needing it for a while, it’s still a good idea to double-check that your winter equipment is still working. The last thing you need is to be stuck at home because you can’t plow your driveway.
