Due to COVID-19, many more individuals will be doing their holiday shopping online. Chances are, many more scammers or identity theft issues may happen. Now more than ever, being aware of the sites you are shopping on is important. Let’s review a few things to be aware of with online shopping.
Is the site secure?
The first thing you want to check when coming onto a site is that it is secure. You can determine that by checking if the padlock is closed at the front of the URL and it says HTTPS, not just HTTP. If the padlock is not closed and there is no “s” at the end of the HTTP, immediately leave the website and do not buy from that site.
Should you pay using PayPal?
If you’re doing holiday shopping on a site that you may not normally shop on and they offer the ability to pay using PayPal, even if you will be using your credit card, take that option. With their security measures, they provide protection for both the buyer and seller when it comes to purchasing. They also offer a service called PayPal Purchase Protection that covers the payer in the event of a problem.
How often should you review your accounts?
Banks and credit cards all allow you to view your most up-to-date information in your online account. Review your accounts once a week to make sure there is no suspicious activity. If you see something suspicious, take care of it immediately!
We hope everyone stays safe throughout the holiday season!
