If you are like me you are counting the days to the official end of winter. You are looking forward to opening your windows and letting some fresh air in, listening to the birds and smelling the flowers. But before we can do all of that winter has to end! When thinking of Spring the last thought in your mind is cleaning or repairing your home from water damage.
Winter weather can be brutal to your home specially with its combination of snow, strong winds, freezing rain and hail. One area that is most affected are your rain gutters and downspouts that might seem like nothing more than long metal or plastic tubes, but they are actually designed to prevent serious water damage to your home’s walls, crawlspaces, and foundation. It’s crucial that they be thoroughly cleaned and inspected for any damage.
After making sure that your gutters are in good shape, I highly recommend the use of a water alarm. Using a water alarm in potentially leaky places is one of the most effective ways to prevent mold, mildew and serious water damage. Place water alarms in areas of the house that are susceptible to leaks from “natural causes” (such as rain, melting snow and ice, freezing temperatures or rising ground water). Vulnerable areas in your home include the attic, basement, garage and crawlspaces.
Water alarms come in different shapes, sizes and price range. It’s a great and inexpensive way to have peace of mind to enjoy the beautiful weather that’s to come with Spring.
